For Christmas my wife bought me this kit from qkits. http://www.qkits.com/serv/qkits/diy/pages/QK145.asp
It does involve soldering although I do believe you can buy one assembled for a bit more money. A bit of computer skills will help too. I downloaded a little utility at http://quozl.us.netrek.org/ts/ to get the temps and I then wrote a script (Linux) to update Twitter and insert the temp into a MySQL database. I use cron to run the script. You can do it in Windoze too, er, good luck with that. I did find this Windows utility that tweets from the command line, but I have not tested it, you can download it at http://phalacee.com/index.php?page=development§ion=app&development=19
